Lesson 3.3 – Heal Height
This is really for architects and builders, but I want to mention it briefly.
A “tall heel height roof system” refers to using roof trusses with a raised heel to allow for thicker insulation in the attic along the eaves, enhancing energy efficiency. This design enables full-depth, uncompressed insulation from the exterior wall to the truss, improving the insulation’s thermal resistance.
In the image below you can see a raised heel, and the space it provides for the insulation to meet code requirements. It also allows attic ventilation from the soffit to the peak of the home. This is how all roofs should be designed. Note – Please ignore the batt insulation. The insulation pictured wouldn’t pass code and give your home the needed insulation. Blown Cellulose from our table would be the way to go.

This image is of a typical house with a regular heal height, you can see that the insulation is insufficient. Additionally, but equally important, how would you properly ventilate this attic as designed?
